Frequently asked questions

What do I need to connect my solar panels to a battery and the Hive app?
Your installers will fit conduct an onsite health check of your solar array. Once they’ve confirmed everything is working as it should they install your battery and new invertor, a Hive Bridge – and a Hive Hub if you don’t already have one. The Bridge and Hub are provided at no extra cost as part of your installation when you buy compatible battery (and solar) equipment from Effective Home, Forster Group, Heatable or Greener Energy Group after an introduction from us. Please note that we are only responsible for the Hive products that are provided to you – and you can find the T&Cs for the Hive Bridge and Hive Hub here.
Does Hive install my battery equipment?
No, Hive doesn’t provide or install home batteries, solar panels and other equipment. Once you share your details on the Hive website, we’ll introduce you to the installers – either Effective Home, Forster Group, Heatable or Greener Energy Group, depending on where you live. They will take care of your purchase and installation. Because you’ve been introduced through Hive, you’ll get a Hive Bridge (and a Hive Hub - if you don’t have one) at no extra cost. These will connect your battery, panels and other equipment to the Hive app. Please note that Hive is not responsible for solar installations and does not guarantee the work carried out by Effective Home, Forster Group, Heatable or Greener Energy Group. You are responsible for making a decision on their suitability.
Does the installation affect my existing warranty?
No, the new inverter and battery come with a 10-year warranty. You just need to confirm that you or the original installer (if still under warranty) are responsible for the existing solar system
How much does adding a home battery cost?
Prices start from £4250 for a 5.23 kWh battery. This gives you:
  • • Solar Health Check of your existing system
  • Supply and installation of your new battery
  • Hive
Is adding a battery to my home worth it?
Yes. Like solar panels, which reduce your electricity bills over time, adding a battery lets you store and use more of the electricity you generate for when you need it most. You also save 25% for any electricity you do use from the grid via the exclusive Hive Solar Saver discount.¹ And because the electricity solar generates is zero carbon, it’s a brilliant way of making your home even greener.
Will a 5.32 kWh battery be enough for my needs?
According to Ofgem, a typical UK homes uses 7.4 kWh energy a day. Obviously, there are several things that can influence this including the size of your house, the number of occupants, your heating system/usage, but by adding a battery you can make sure you store any excess energy for when you might need it more. However, our partner experts will be there throughout the process to advise you on the right battery system for your home and your needs.
How long does a battery take to install?
Battery installation usually only takes less than a day.
How much energy from my solar panel will I be able to store?
A solar power system is made up of several panels, but depending on their age and efficiency the amount of energy generated will vary. Our partner experts will conduct a Solar Health Check and be able to tell you how you system is a performing. And with the Hive app you’ll be able to monitor your generation and usage with new, modern equipment.
What are the benefits of getting a battery installed?
Without a battery, any energy you currently generate needs to be used immediately by your home – or sold back to the grid. But a battery gives you the option of storing energy so it can be used later. You’ll use less energy from the grid, which will mean lower electricity bills.
How do I make money by selling my surplus energy back to the grid?
Depending on the age of your solar installation you may already have a Feed-In Tariff (FIT) agreement in place. As these often meant you are paid for what you generated, by adding a battery you will be able to decide when you want to self- consume rather than having to export the energy. And if you don’t have a FIT agreement you can sign up to a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff and you can sell your surplus energy back to the grid.
What is an inverter and why do I need one?
An inverter is a device that converts electricity from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC), which is the kind of electricity supplied by the grid and used by appliances around your home. As part of the installation a new hybrid invertor will be fitted along with your battery. All covered by a new warranty, giving you peace of mind for another 10 years.
Do I pay VAT on a battery?
Battery installations in homes have a zero rate of VAT so you won’t need to pay VAT on them. UK government’s VAT relief on energy saving materials (ESMs) applies to installations from Feb 2024.
